    Evening Rain

    • When I first visited the English Lake District, I was instantly attracted to the beauty of its ancient landscape. At the foot of mountains, on the meadows and by the lakes, old houses covered their roofs with slates, Herdwick sheep and another livestock grazing on the grass, and above all, stone walls meandering through hills and fields, all looked stunningly beautiful and still are.

Stone walls provide field boundaries as well as shelter for livestock and blend into the Lakeland scenery beautifully. However, the roots lie as far back as the middle ages when first enclosure took place in the early 13th century. Stone walls are, as it were, the eyewitness of English history and the embodiment of vernacular art making each highland scenery uniquely special. One of the internationally acclaimed land artists Andy Goldsworthy has also been fascinated by the beauty of these stone walls, and he left many site-specific sculptures using the same traditional stonewalling technique.

As for me, I wanted to portray them as a taciturn yet honest witness of the history situated quietly in the midst of the Lake District widely know for its rough weather.
